Entire Story:

San Francisco, Calif. (KCBS) -- Steps are being taken in San Francisco to prepare for a worldwide decline in oil production and skyrocketing prices.

KCBS reporter George Harris explains that noted energy expert and author Richard Heinberg believes people should get used to oil prices going up because oil production will soon peak.

"We are at the point as so many have said, of the end of cheap oil. Alternatives are there but they will be costly," warned Heinberg.

Alternatives include clean, green technology like wind and solar.

San Francisco is at the forefront of preparing for the oil crunch said Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi. "What we want is to lessen our reliance on fossil fuel. How we plan to do that is restructure our relationship with those who require us to be reliant on fossil fuel."

David Room, founder of Energy Preparedness, a consulting firm that helps municipalities get ready for the looming oil prices. "Is San Francisco prepared for $200 to $300 per barrel oil?" he asked.

The prices will have a profound impact on fuel reliant city services like police, fire and medical response.
