Peak Moment 174: Jan Spencer didn’t stop with a permaculture makeover of his suburban home in Eugene, Oregon. Now he’s taking on the neighborhood! As a result, his neighborhood association is teaming up with city programs like Neighborhood Watch and Urgent situation Response to empower neighbors to work together. They’re transforming lawns and abandoned lots into edible gardens, and sharing knowledge about energy efficiency, permaculture, and preparedness. These grass roots endeavors help public feel more secure in their homes, since they’re connected with neighbors they can rely on.

@drey983 Hey drey, thanks again for the info. Yes, I checked them out a few days ago, and they have some fantastic products. I am trying to build a solar generator myself to know how it works. A new Harbor Goods store is being built a fleeting distance from me which I am excited about. I guess I’ll need to checkout more how-to vids and grill the staff at Harbor Goods.

The atmosphere of this conversation fosters a sense of hope. No doom and obscurity, get the guns and run for the hills apocalyptic visions of a lost world, but an examination of progress owing to change. Sure we may be looking at an end to life as we know it, but likely an new beginning also. Individual efforts to grow local community are the first steps in this long journey. Hope lives on in each of us.

@scarmenl I believe the discussion is how we will feed a population when the fuel to run the machines becomes top secret, not the purposeful dismantling of an industry. Here is no reason for persons even in metropolitan area to go hungry. Diets will change, & the luxury of out of season foods will exist, the part of income that goes to buy food will become more in line with realty. The threat to industry is end of cheap fuel, tho that may lead to on farm biofuel Prod. to grow certain items.

@scarmenl Respectfully I believe U R mis-applying conquer & divide to what the man is suggesting. When facing peak oil multiple small communities will mean food security, when transport over as small as a 100 miles may pose a conundrum.

I also see U R concerned about moving backward. Backwards may be only a frame of mind, though we will finally be forced to make choices of what is vital or elemental. cuz having it all was never really sustainable.

Fascinating curriculum, but the comments are more so. Fact of the matter is the fuel that currently fuels industrial food production will run out at some point. I’m no dread monger, cuz I know, while diet will change, here is no reason why the population need suffer hunger/malnutrition. Beasts of burden just may become vital to food production again moving more food production closer to the consumer.

@whiskerchild of course the simple answer is to go, but that is generally impractical, with no guarantee your new neighbors feel the same as U. unless U quest out an intentional community

@mos6507 Not saying that. Just pointing out that while doing your own is excellent don’t get fooled into thinking that going all the way back to plowing fields by hand or by animal is a excellent thing either.
If you are talking about a home garden by all means have fun and delight in the bounty of same.

I don’t like the attitude that the following you pick up a shovel public reckon you’re dying for the return of the median-ages. Even michelle obama has a victory garden. If nothing else, it’s an insurance policy if the system fails. It doesn’t mean we’ve all actively turned our back on technology. If you’ve watched all the videos you should know all this by now.

Nobody’s forcing you to watch these videos. If you don’t buy into the visions experessed here, stay out. Buy your Glenn Beck survival seeds, your #10 cans of dried foods, and hoard your guns waiting for the jack boot thugs. That’s not what this is all about.

Yes, you better imagine this, since the whole premise in the rear this show (if you cared to watch the title sequence) is the notion that technology will fail whether we like it or not, due to limits to growth. If you want to cling to the notion that the government is the root of all our problems, you should go back to Alex Jones where you belong and let the rest of us get on with it.

@mos6507 What! You mean that group made and supported by the CIA. The exact kind of thing that your lying government should have to answer for.
I despise terrorism as well and when your government stops causing so much of it the world will be a better place.
In the mean time, allowing all tech and industry to be dismantled and taken away or over is insane. It leaves us helpless and hopeless. Imagine trying to grown food and keep the population feed with out machines and heavy equipment.

Broken into small groups? Reckon of it as decentralization. You know what one of the most resilient decentralized organizations is in the world? Al-Qaeda! I despise terrorism, but the fact that we can’t completely win the game of whack-a-mole with Al-Qaeda is testament to the notion of decentralization. Not having a single point of failure is what it’s all about.

So I really reckon you haven’t thought owing to some of these concepts fully.

@mos6507 What I mean is two things. One is that if we allow ourselves to broken into small groups it is much simpler for anyone with terrible intent to do something. Following the drive towards a simpler life that plans for less or no oil should not go us back wards in industry and tech. For all the terrible that is out here now here is a fantastic deal of excellent that could be brought forward.

Not so hard as you’d reckon if you do just one thing a month.

Get a food dehydrator this month. Get a solar oven the next month. Look into solar PV or hot water the month after that. Read and self-educate. Watch several of these peak moment videos. Listen to the weekly interview/conversations on the podcast “Two Beers with Steve

Fantastic video, networking is very vital I feel. I try my best but country public the world over seem to be very similar. Insular, untrusting and under educated. It’s hard to know what to do with them. They literally turn away when you look at them.

I fired off an order for the dvd. I look forward to seeing more of what he has to say.

Of course I live in a condo, and I’m 3 months away from finally paying this place off so I don’t know when I’ll really have a back yard to work with. A house with the same square footage as my condo would cost me an extra 130 thousand, at the least. I can buy a lot of produce at PCC (an organic grocery co-op) or a farm produce subscription I’m looking at, for one hundred and thirty thousand friggen dollars.
